In reading, students learned how to determine the author's purpose for writing. Students practiced this skill after reading George Washington's Teeth and Animals on the Move. Students then completed an assessment after reading What Does the President Do? on Bookflix. Students also drew the beginning, middle, and end of our oral vocabulary story A Taste of Salt.

In math, students learned how to make a ten in an equation with a 9 as one addend ( 9+3 = 12 is the same as 10+2 = 12). Students practiced this skill by using cubes to illustrate their thinking and writing equations on a whiteboard.

In Writer's Workshop, students used the Magic Treehouse series as inspiration for their own mystery story. Students then shared their writing during stars and wishes!

In centers, students reviewed adding 3 numbers together by playing Super Scoopers! Students also wrote about what they would do if they lost their teeth like George Washington, and matched "ee" and "ea" homophones.

In science, students tested solids with a magnet and also examined the properties of two new solids: a button and a sponge!

For Fun Friday, students learned all about blogging! Mrs. Diehl will be visiting our class every Friday through the end of the year to teach students about blogging, audience, commenting, and internet safety.

In reading, students identified who the speaker is at different points in a story. Students practiced this skill after reading Cinderella and Drakestail, and then completed an assessment after reading Olive, My Love.

In math, students learned to solve equations with three addends. Students analyzed the three components and isolated the two parts that add up to 10. Students practiced this skill by creating three separate groups using pattern blocks and drawing a circle around the two parts that make a 10.

In science, students studied whether solids can be rolled or stacked. Students also categorized solids according to their softness and hardness. Finally, students tested if their solids could sink or float!

On Thursday we had our Valentine's Day party! Students exchanged cards and treats, and then made handmade cards for their families.

In reading, students compared and contrasted two texts on the same topic. Students practiced this skill after reading two books about snow, and then completed an assessment comparing two texts about Chinese New Year.

In writer's workshop, students used a main idea and detail graphic organizer to streamline their ideas. Students wrote about a topic they were an "expert" on, and then edited their work by checking spelling and punctuation.

In science, students continued to study matter. We examined different solids and discussed their properties. Students then observed a collection of solids and categorized them in many ways depending on their different properties.

In math, students learned about fact families and all of the number sentences that can be created with these three numbers. Students practiced illustrating their thinking by completing math drawings after reading a word problem.

Arabella was our Can-Do Kid this week! We loved learning about all the things Arabella can do. She read her favorite Pigeon book, and also told the class that her favorite subject is Fun Friday!

On Friday we celebrated the 100th day of school! It was so cool to see all of the kids' unique interpretations of what they will look like when they are 100. Students celebrated by making eyeglasses, doing 100 exercises, and creating portraits of themselves when they are 100 years old.

In reading, students learned to identify the main idea of a nonfiction text and isolate key details that support the main idea. We practiced this skill as a class after reading Schools Around the World. Students later read the Time for Kids article Sharing with Others and worked with partners to identify the main idea and key details.

In math, students learned about the complements of 10. Students played a Make a 10 game in groups to practice math fact fluency, and wrote two subtraction sentences to accompany each complement of 10.

For Fun Friday, students learned all about Chinese New Year. Sophie celebrates this holiday at home, so she shared some of her family's traditions with the class. Sophie likes to eat hot pot on this day, so she drew a diagram of what a hot pot looks like and explained to the class how it is eaten.

Students also created dragon lanterns to celebrate the holiday.

There are no extra pictures this week due to the shortened school week. Also, just a reminder that next Friday, February 7th is the 100th Day of School!
